A young man identified as Pereira Tenente was arrested by police in Beira, Sofala province, on Monday for impersonating a Mozambique Electricity (EDM) official and swindling people out of a total of 30,000 meticais with promises of employment.
The suspect said he began running the scam when contacted by a friend who worked at the EDM in Beira but currently lives in Manica. For each person recruited, Tenente received 200 meticais.
The accused claimed that he was attached to the EDM human resources department and charged victims amounts ranging from 1,500 to 4,500 meticais.
Sofala police spokesman Daniel Macuácua said the young man was detained while in the course of claiming one last victim. A criminal case has been brought against him.
Meanwhile, in the city of Chimoio, Manica province, another phoney public official fell into the hands of the police after claiming several victims.
The detainee, whose identity has not been disclosed, claimed to be a tax director at the Tax Authority of Mozambique (AT), and extorted money from businesses. He has denied the charges and challenged the police to prove that he committed any such crime.
Manica police spokesman Mateus Mindú said the man had been arrested in the past for similar offences but seemed to be incorrigible. Mindu stressed that claiming false credentials in order to obtain gains for yourself or another person is a criminal offence.
