A mission from the Economic Community of West African Nations (ECOWAS) is due to visit Bissau, the capital of Guinea Bissau on Monday to assess the country’s current situation.
According to a source from the Guinea Bissau government, the mission intends to assess the implementation of the Lome and Conakry agreement and to get an overview of the steps being taken to hold general elections, scheduled for 18 November.
The mission is headed by the Nigerian Foreign Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, and during his stop of just a few hours in Bissau he is due to meet with the Guinean authorities, who signed the Conakry agreement, and representatives of international organisations.
In April, the ECOWAS heads of State and Government met at an extraordinary meeting in Lome, Togo, to find a solution to the political stalemate that Guinea BIssau had faced for over three years.
The summit nominated Aristides Gomes as Prime Minister of Guinea Bissau, the opening of the country’s parliament, as well as scheduling a general election on 18 November.
