Capital of Mozambique has one car for every four people

Despite the congestion crisis, the number of motor vehicles in the country does not stop growing. Between 2016 and 2017, 30,000 cars were purchased. The increase in the overall fleet number reduces the ratio to one car for every 45 inhabitants of Mozambique, but in the capital there is one car for every four people.

@Verdade correlated figures from the Transport and Communications Statistics and the population estimates of the National Institute of Statistics of 2017, which showed that in the city of Maputo, where 40.1% of the 735,954 national car fleet is registered, there is a light or heavy vehicle for every four inhabitants.

The largest part of the car fleet in Mozambique’s capital city of is made up of 200,421 light vehicles, raising the ratio for one light vehicles for every five citizens of Maputo.

With 252,944 registered motor vehicles, the province of Maputo has the second largest car fleet in Mozambique, with one car for every nine inhabitants. Counting only light vehicles, the ratio increases for one car for 13 people.

The smallest car fleet in the country is in Niassa province, where there is one vehicle per 1,243 inhabitants. When segmented by vehicle type, there are only 397 light vehicles registered, increasing the ratio in the northern province to one car for 4,700 inhabitants.

As far as concerns the authorities’ belief that accelerated growth in the country’s car fleet may be influencing bloodshed on the roads, the highest number of road accidents in 2017 was recorded in Maputo province, rising from 376 in 2016 to 598. Much of that was the 357 car crashes that killed 67 people, followed by 154 car-pedestrian incidents that killed 75.
