One of the 24 lions transferred about a month ago to two game parks in Sofala province in central Mozambique has been put down after it fell into a poachers’ trap, an official source said on Thursday.
The animal was severely injured when it fell into the trap and park rangers were forced to put it out of its misery, Zambeze Delta Safaris (ZDS), the game park concessionaire said.
“This huge effort to enrich the wild life in Mozambique suffered another hard blow from unscrupulous people who use the most treacherous methods to attain their criminal objectives”, the park said.
The animals arrived in Mozambique between 24 and 26 June from South Africa as part of an animal resettlement programme in the region.
The million dollar operation was paid for by two North American philanthropists.
The group was comprised of 18 females and six males offered by different provinces in South Africa.
