More than 5,000 veterans, from three groups, gather in Beira to celebrate Victory Day

Beira, capital of the central province of Sofala, will be the scene on Friday of Mozambique’s main Victory Day celebrations, celebrated also, since 2014, as Combatant Day.

The event, celebrated under the motto ‘Combatants for Peace and Development of the Country’, will see 5,625 veterans of three groups: Combatants of the National Liberation Struggle, plus the Combatants in Defence of Democracy and Sovereignty and Combatants with Disabilities. Of this number, 5,000 live in Sofala and the remainder in other provinces.

The Victory Day celebrations aim to bring together combatants with the aim of transmitting to Mozambican society in general and the younger generations in particular the historical significance of September 7, as well as the values of peace, national unity and patriotism.

The event, which will consist of the placing of a wreath at the monument in memory of the National Heroes followed by various cultural activities, will have as its high point a parade of the three groups of combatants.

Lusaka Accord between the Portuguese state and the Liberation Front of Mozambique (Frelimo) was signed in the Zambian capital on 7 September 1974.

In the agreement, Portugal formally recognised the right of the Mozambican people to independence and agreed the date and subsequent steps of the transfer of its sovereignty over Mozambique to Frelimo.
