The hotel occupancy rate in Mozambique increase by 12.8% between 2016 and 2017, the tourist statistics bulletin reported on Wednesday.
Despite the national increase, growth was only seen in four of the country’s 11 provinces, particularly in Inhambane in the south of the country, 500 km from the capital, a region that is famous for its beaches.
Inhambane had an occupancy rate of 47.2% in 2017, compared with 7.7% the year before.
The other provinces have occupancy rates of under a third, the Mozambican National Statistics Institute (INE) said.
Most of the overnight stays (42.7%) were in or around the capital – the province that was responsible for 43.3% of the jobs in the sector and 73.9% of the industry turnover.
Tourism is one sector that the country’s government wants to expand and invest in.
