Renamo said yesterday that it would respect the Constitutional Council’s decision to reject an appeal against the ban of the candidacy of Venâncio Mondlane, its head of list for Maputo in the October 10 municipal elections.
“We are not going to boycott it – let’s move forward,” Renamo representative André Magibire said yesterday, “The CC is the final arbiter.”
Magibire however accused Frelimo and the MDM of jointly trying to demoralise Renamo.
“The Constitution does not deny the right to elect and be elected to those who have resigned,” he said, noting that it denied it “to the head of state only”.
He also said that he had hoped the CC would act in an “impartial manner”, but considered that this was not the case because the grounds for the decision “failed to convince”.
But, as a result, the head of list of the Renamo in the city of Maputo will be General Hermínio Morais, previously second in the official list of the party.
Renamo and Venâncio Mondlane appealed to the Constitutional Council last month against the decision of the National Elections Commission (CNE) to remove the head of the list for the October 10 municipal elections in the capital.
The CNE considered Venâncio Mondlane ineligible because in 2013 he resigned as a member of Maputo City Council to sit as an MDM deputy in the Assembly of the Republic. Mondlane then left the MDM last month to join Renamo.
