Expogema 2018: Maputo hosts Gem, Mineral & Jewellery Show, Debates

Precious stones extracted in Mozambique will be on display at the 7th Edition of the National Fair of Gems, Minerals and Jewellery (Expogema 2018), to be held today and tomorrow at the Gloria Hotel in Maputo.

Director of the National Museum of Geology, Dino Milice said emeralds, tourmalines, aquamarines, sapphires, rubies and various types of quartz would be on display, some of them for sale.

Twenty exhibitors had confirmed their presence at the event, which presents itself as “a platform for debate on and the exhibition of Mozambique’s natural resources”, Milice said. The fair also includes meetings which will analyse and discuss the impact of mineral resources on the country’s development.

Expogema brings together political decision makers, academics, entrepreneurs, vendors and artisanal miners at a time when the extractive sector is one of the fastest growing in Mozambique.

Mining and quarrying was the fastest growing sector in the Mozambican economy during the first half of the year, up 15.7% year-on-year, and the exploitation of precious stones and other minerals in the first half of 2018 registered growth rates between 18% and 70% against the same period in 2017, according to the latest biannual balance sheet of the government’s Economic and Social Plan.
