Rwanda’s ruling Patriotic Front (RPF) of President Paul Kagame is leading in the country’s parliamentary elections, according to preliminary results received by the National Electoral Commission (NEC) on Tuesday. Rwanda held parliamentary elections on Monday to elect members of the lower house of the East African nation’s parliament.
The electoral commission said the results received so far showed that the ruling RPF has won nearly 70% of the total votes, well ahead of its two main rivals including the Social Democratic Party – PSD (9%) and the Liberal Party – PL (8%).
According to the initial results, the main opposition Democratic Green party and Socialist Party – PS-Imberakuri have over 4% each, while all independent candidates have less than 1%.
The electoral commission has received the results of about 70 percent of the total 3.051 polling stations in the country and in the diaspora.
The trend shows that the coalition of the ruling RPF and other small political parties is likely to get a majority in the lower house of the Rwandan parliament.
Only the three political parties including the ruling RPF, PSD and PL are likely to get seats, as threshold is 5%, it said.
