In what could be considered the first test of the popularity of its candidates, Frelimo brought together music, dance, entertainment and many members and supporters for the first public presentation of its candidates for the forthcoming municipal elections in Maputo. Candidates headed to the podium one by one to receive standing ovations from party members.
Head of list Éneas Comiche did not waste time before presenting the outlines of his governance project.
Comiche said his priority would be the transport sector. “We will put an end to ‘My Love’ [open trucks carrying passengers]”, he said. Territorial organisation and urbanisation were his other priorities. Comiche said he wanted people to have land and land titles but with proper urbanisation to enable the provision of emergency services like ambulances and firefighters.
Speaking in a crime-ridden neighbourhood (Polana Caniço), Frelimo’s head-of-list candidate could not fail to address security. “We want to live in our homes without any fear,” he said, promising, among other measures, to improve public lighting in order to reduce opportunities for criminal activity.
Eneas Comiche went on to speak of what he considers to be the most important issue on his agenda: youth employment. He pledged to create conditions for young people to get better training and hence enjoy better job opportunities.
“Of the population of Maputo, of more than one million and a hundred thousand inhabitants, the majority are young people … we will organise ourselves to solve this problem quickly,” Comiche said.
On the occasion, Frelimo’s first secretary at the Maputo city level, Francisco Mabjaia was pleased with the receptiveness of the people to the candidates and said he was sure that his party had made the right choice.
“From the first to the last, they [the candidates] were applauded. All of them. It means that Frelimo has good grassroots support – and that we have succeeded in choosing candidates that citizens feel represent them,” Mabjaia said.
The event took place in the 7 de Abril sports field in the Polana Caniço neighbourhood and saw performances by musicians Roberto Chitsondzo, Matilde Conjo and candidate Lorena Nhate.
