Another attack leaves one injured and hundreds homeless in Palma – report

A group of insurgents injured one person and displaced hundreds more in an attack on Pundanhar’s headquarters village, in the district of Palma, in the Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, late on Tuesday night, sources told VOA on Wednesday.

The attack, which destroyed the local administration’s secretariat, comes a week after a military operation by the Defence and Security Forces allegedly against a base of the group, which at the time killed four insurgents and captured a suspected group leader.

“One person was attacked with a machete and is now being assisted in the district hospital of Palma,” said a resident who identified himself as Mussa and described an atmosphere of “terror” in the village. He said several houses were burned down.

“Several people have fled to Tanzania and others to the neighbouring districts of Palma,” another resident said, adding that the climate of insecurity had increased in the region.

Contacted by VOA, Palma administrator David Machimbuko neither confirmed nor denied the attack and referred us to the Defence and Security Forces for details.

Um grupo de insurgentes feriu uma pessoa e desalojou outras centenas num ataque à sede de Pundanhar, no distrito de Palma, na província moçambicana de Cabo Delgado na noite de terça-feira, 21, disseram várias fontes à VOA nesta quarta-feira.

O ataque, que destruiu a secretaria da administração local, ocorre uma semana após uma operação militar das Forças de Defesa e Segurança alegadamente contra uma base do grupo, que, na ocasião, matou quatro insurgentes e capturou um suposto líder do grupo.

“Foi catanada a uma pessoa, que está a ser assistida agora no hospital distrital de Palma”, disse um morador que se identificou como Mussa e que descreveu um ambiente de “terror” na aldeia que teve várias casas incendiadas.

“Várias pessoas fugiram para a Tanzânia e outras para os distritos vizinhos de Palma”, revelou outro morador, sustentando que o clima de insegurança aumentou na região.

Contactado pela VOA, o administrador de Palma, David Machimbuko, não confirmou nem desmentiu o ataque e remeteu detalhes as Forças de Defesa e Segurança.
