Mozambique: Boost multilateral cooperation with UN to tackle world crises - govt
The recently appointed governor of the central Mozambican province of Manica, Manuel Alberto, on Monday urged the population of Tambara district to unite and work to find solutions to the problems they face.
Speaking at a rally in the district capital, Nhacolo, the governor listed the key problems deserving the attention of all Mozambicans, including agricultural production, unemployment, illiteracy, the fight against corruption, and better assistance for the neediest strata in society.
He stressed that collective work, in a spirit of unity, is key to solving these problems and achieving better conditions for the well-being of Mozambicans. But for this Mozambicans need to enjoy effective peace.
Unity, tolerance and forgiveness, in a spirit of brotherhood, were basic assumptions for attaining peace and continuing to work for the growth of the country, he said.
“We have seen that President Filipe Nyusi has been talking with Renamo to find a solution to the problems, and to bring effective peace to the country”, said Alberto. “Manica is an integral part of Mozambique. We need to recognise that each Mozambican is called upon to make a contribution so that we can have this peace in our country, regardless of political party allegiance, religion, race or sex”.
“You are called upon to work so that we may enjoy peace, and produce to generate wealth for Mozambique”, he declared.
He called on his audience to fight against evils that hold back development, such as rumour-mongering and corruption.
“In public institutions, corrupt people cannot be forgiven”, said Alberto. “When you are charged money for any services, don’t be afraid – tell the administrator and other institutions, so that those who make illicit charges can be punished, because these practices in no way help achieve the government’s target which is the development of Mozambique”.
The local regulo (chief), Watissone Mabande, speaking on behalf of the population of Tambara, urged the government to ensure that the 130 kilometre road between Nhacolo and Calingamuntsi, in the neighbouring district of Guro is paved. Currently this is a dirt road, and he believed this is hindering the development of Tambara.
“The people recognise the government’s efforts in creating better living conditions. We have more schools and hospitals, the mobile phone network and the bridge over the Muira river”, said Mabande. “But one of the difficulties is the road. We believe that if the road were tarred, there would be more investment, generating more jobs and consequently developing the district”.
Alberto replied that development is gradual. He pointed out that nowadays people can move around the province without great difficulty “because we have bridges. Little by little, we are solving these problems. Now we are concluding the electrification of the district capitals. The localities will follow”.
The problems would be solved “because when Frelimo makes promises, it keeps them”, he added. “What is important is that we should be united and committed to peace and work”.
