Mozambique: INAM warns of formation of low atmospheric pressure system
Three Portuguese nationals have been arrested at Maputo International Airport while trying to smuggle 16.5 kilogrammes of illicit drugs out of Mozambique, the police reported on Friday. Maputo city police spokesperson Leonel Muchina told journalists in Maputo on Friday that the Portuguese nationals, who were in transit, were subjected to a security check when they were about to embark on a Lisbon-bound flight.
Muchina said the Portuguese trio was arrested together with their Mozambican accomplice who is employed by Mozambique Handling Company (MHS), the country’s airports management company.
The MHS employee is believed to have facilitated the safe passage of the baggage.
“The three Portuguese nationals belong to a larger group that also involves Mozambicans who facilitate passage of drugs,” Mucinha said.
The police spokesperson did not say when the Portuguese citizens were arrested nor did he provide more details on the type of drugs seized.
Mozambique has lately become a transit country for drug dealers, with an estimated one tonne of cocaine said to allegedly pass through the country per month.
