Launch of the book “Genealogias de Moçambique”, by Jorge Forjaz
The launching session will feature the presence of the author and the presentation of the book by António Sopa.
The book "Genealogias de Moçambique" studies the oldest families in this country, especially those that settled in the oldest population centers, such as Ilha de Moçambique, Ilha do Ibo, Tete, Inhambane, Quelimane and Lourenço Marques (Maputo) of 223 families, organized in alphabetical order, with more than 800 illustrations (portraits, churches, graves, etc.). The majority of the studied families are of Portuguese origin, but also families of different origins like England, France, Holland, Mauritius, Greece, Spain, Italy, Goa, etc. The work consists of 2 volumes, of 880 pages each, and includes a complete index of names.
After extensive research in Portuguese and Mozambican archives over the last 12 years, the author presents to the public in Maputo this work, which is part of a more general plan of study of Portuguese families in former Portuguese territories, with the publication of the "Macanese Families "(3 vols.)," Portuguese Luso-descendants of Portuguese India "(3 vols.), The" Genealogies of São Tomé and Príncipe "(1 vol.) which will be followed in 2019. "Families of Cape Verde and Guinea".
This initiative has the support of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
Jorge Forjaz was born in Angra do Heroísmo, Portugal in 1944. Degree in History U.P., principal advisor of the Public Library and Regional Archive of Angra do Heroísmo.
