Hosting precious stones fairs could be a way to encourage informal workers to become registered, Candido Rangeiro, Mozambique’s minister of natural resources and energy, told Lusa on Thursday.
Rangeiro said during the 3rd edition of the Annual Gems Fair (Fagena) that the country loses revenue due to the illegal trade of precious stones.
“Illegal trade of precious and semi-precious stones and the smuggling of natural resources continue to concern the government,” Rangeiro said.
Over 30 exhibitors will be attending the Annual Gems Fair, which began on Wednesday and runs till Friday.
“Fagena aims to create a space of national reference and for the internationalisation of precious stones made in Mozambique,” Rangeiro said.
