Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Wednesday called on members of the Central Committee of the ruling Frelimo Party to promote individual discipline in order to ensure the cohesion of the Party, and thus preserve the values and principles of Frelimo.
Speaking in his capacity as President of Frelimo, at the opening of a four day meeting of the Central Committee in the southern city of Matola, Nyusi declared “in party discipline, we do not find the spirit of someone being more or less important, more or less influential”.
“Our dream is to see Frelimo members in their party branches criticizing and being criticized, members who are ready and available, members who listen and who are listened to”, he said. “It is a dream of comrades who trust and who are trusted, who express their thoughts freely and in front of other comrades, or of the Party bodies to which they belong”.
This was the discipline “of those who use the space of their Party body to make Frelimo grow and to make the country progress”.
Nyusi denounced the attack by gunmen of the rebel movement Renamo who “attack vehicles, invade farms and persecute community leaders and grass roots leaders of our party”.
He drew parallels between these man-made disasters, and the natural disasters striking the country – the severe drought in much of the southern and central provinces, and last week’s storms and exceptional high tides in coastal areas.
“These disasters and crimes”, said Nyusi, “despite our good level of response, are continuing to cause suffering and the loss of human lives and of property”.
The Central Committee, he said, must devote much of its time and attention “to the search for a lasting peace for Mozambicans and to the country’s economic situation. The lack of effective peace constrains economic growth”.
The conflict with Renamo, and the behaviour of the Mozambican economy “are increasing the cost of living for Mozambicans and reducing their hopes”, Nyusi continued. It was up to Frelimo “to lead the process that seeks to reverse this situation, and we are called upon to be part of this moment, with the support of our entire people”.
Turning to poverty, Nyusi criticised the trend to imagine that it was a “mental or intellectual” problem, which led to a tendency to override the opinions of the poor. This was “a trend to think and decide on behalf of the poor, denying the poor and the weakest the freedom to decide on their own future”.
“We, the Mozambican people, can and must think for ourselves about our own destinies”, he stressed.
