Complications in childbirth and unsafe abortions kill more than 400 women annually in Zambézia, the province’s public health officer, Filipe Vicente, told a seminar on abortion in Quelimane on Thursday.
Filipe Vicente said that cases of maternal mortality in the communities were on the increase, in parallel with the number of informal terminations performed in environments unfit for the purpose.
To reverse this scenario, 20 health units in Zambézia were implementing a new safe abortion strategy.
“When a pregnancy results from rape, the woman may not want to have the child and may seek an abortion, but this abortion must be safe and performed by qualified staff. The problem is province-wide,” he said.
In Mozambique, abortion in a hospital is legal, in light of law 35/2014 of 31 December, approved with the aim of reducing the number of perinatal deaths
