The five members of the management commission of the former Beira Public Transport Company (TPB) were detained between Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning in Beira, as part of an investigation into the embezzlement of around 12.2 million meticais in the period between October 2015 and May 2017.They are being charged of having created illegal subsidies for themselves as a way of withdrawing money.
According to the spokesperson of the Provincial Anti-Corruption Office in Sofala, João Chaua, the five members of the management commission were detained because the actions they carried out constitute embezzlement and money laundering.
The manager of the TPB’s workers’ social fund was also detained on suspicion of having ‘diverted’ 147,000 meticais in the manner outlined above.
João Chaua explained that criminal proceedings had been instituted under No 41/GPCCS/16, essentially involving the collection and analysis of documentary and personal evidence.
The management commission was obliged, within 90 days, to propose to the Ministries of Transport and Communications and of the Economy and Finance, what would be “the human, patrimonial and financial resources transferred to the Municipality of Beira”.
The Commission was composed an official of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, who held the position of president; two officials of the Provincial Directorate of Economy and Finance of Sofala (vice-presidents) and two employees of the former Public Transport Company of Beira.
“The arrest is not the end of the process. It will be followed by the prosecution stage, and referral to the court for a final decision,” Chaua said.
