Defence Minister Atanasio M’tumuke has said that the attacks perpetrated by armed men in parts of Cabo Delgado are an affront to Mozambican sovereignty.
Speaking last Friday in Matola at the opening of the 12th annual meeting of accredited defence attachés in Mozambique, Minister M’tumuke recalled that the attacks were perpetrated by a group of individuals who were trying to introduce new doctrines into local mosques.
“In their incursions, these national and foreign citizens use blades weapons and firearms in an affront to the Mozambican state, disrespecting the legally established order,” the minister said.
Their incursions incited disobedience of governmental authorities, non-compliance with the national education system, disrespect for national symbols and non-payment of taxes, he elaborated.
The Minister of National Defence said that, despite this, the situation was being managed by the armed forces, and the country remained stable with regard to national security.
The one-day meeting took place under the motto, ‘Armed Forces of Defence of Mozambique, investing in partnership in the face of new threats to peace and security’.
