Mozambique’s ruling Frelimo Party on Thursday announced its shortlist of people competing to be the party’s candidate for Mayor of the capital in the municipal elections scheduled for 10 October.
Speaking at a press conference, Margarida Talapa, who heads the Frelimo brigade for the city, revealed that the candidate will be Eneas Comiche, Fernando Sumbana, or Razak Manhique.
Comiche is highly regarded for his courage and integrity. In 2003 he was elected Mayor of Maputo where he gained a reputation for honesty and for fighting against corruption. However, Frelimo did not select him as its candidate in the subsequent mayoral election in 2008.
Comiche is the head of the Budget and Planning Commission in the country’s parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, and a member of the Frelimo Political Commission. He is now 79 years old, and his age could count against him in the inner party election.
Fernando Sumbana is a former Tourism Minister and Razak Manhique is the deputy chairperson of the Maputo Municipal Assembly.
Margarida Talapa also noted the party will tomorrow release the list of candidates for the Maputo municipal elections. She explained an internal election will choose the head of the list.
Under constitutional amendments passed in May, there will no longer be separate mayoral elections. The head of the list of whichever party wins a majority of votes in the assembly elections will automatically become mayor.
