Sea waters invade Iha de Moçambique leaving a trail of destruction

Sea waters accompanied by huge waves and strong winds last weekend invaded the Island of Mozambique off the coast of Nampula province, Mozambique’s first capital.
The tidal phenomenon, the worst in years on the island, destroyed more than 20 homes and an unknown number of stalls along the seafront.
More than 150 residents had their possessions swept away by the water and are now in need of every kind of support. Some people interviewed by O País reported that for two days they have been experiencing difficulties having been forced to leave their homes, and said the violence and speed of the sea’s action gave them no time to save their belongings.
Mozambique Island councilor Amade Chande said that high seas also destroyed access roads and the protective wall along the waterfront. Speaking to O País, Chande made it clear that the city council is not able to repair the damage caused by the sea water.
