Consumers across the country will pay more for water from today, with the entry into force of the new tariff approved by the Council of Ministers through Resolution No. 1/2018 of July 20.
According to the Government Gazette, Maputo, Matola and Boane now charge most for water, at 43 meticais per cubic metre. Nampula, Pemba, Murrébue and Metuge are the next most expensive, with an average tariff of 40.25 meticais.
The new tariff also adjusts the charges for disconnecting and reconnecting supply, water meter assessment, damaged meters and installation vandalism, with rates increasing 23 percent.
For household connections with a faulty or non-existent meter, consumption per month is to be fixed on the basis of “average historical values available up to three months immediately preceding the date of invoicing” or, if not possible, “the invoice shall be issued for an estimated consumption of five cubic meters,” which, in the case of Maputo, Matola and Boane municipalities will be 132.66 meticais, against the 73 meticais charged under the 2016 tariff.
The new tariffs chart gets the green light after consideration by the Council of Ministers, following proposals presented by the Council of Water Regulation (CRA) and based on its assessment of the need for “safeguarding systems maintenance, continuing to provide a quality service, and consumer protection”.
