Mozambique supports voluntary repatriation of Rwandans – AIM report

Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi, who on Thursday started a 3-day state visit to Rwanda announced that his government is willing to support all Rwandan citizens who voluntarily wish to return to their home country.
Nyusi made this announcement at the state banquet in his honour offered by his host and Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame, explaining that such exercise should be done in collaboration with Kigali.
He also said that the government will continue to welcome those Rwandans who wish to remain in Mozambique “in the spirit of brotherhood of African peoples.”
Mozambique hosts a significant Rwandan community which, according to Nyusi, is peacefully engaged in a number of income-generating activities, including trade, poultry farming, and agriculture, among other initiatives.
“The Mozambican government continues to pay attention because this group of Rwandan citizens has been contributing to the employability of our fellow citizens and generation of family incomes through the promotion of small and medium enterprises,” said the President, at the banquet attended by government officials and businesspeople of both countries, among other guests.
Official figures show that Mozambique is home to a Rwandan community estimated at some 3,000 people, including refugees, asylum seekers, and businesspeople.
The Rwandan authorities, however, suspect that some of those involved in the 1994 genocide, which decimated more than 800,000 people, may be hiding in Mozambique. These fugitives are being sought by the Rwandan government to face justice.
Meanwhile, there is no extradition agreement between Mozambique and Rwanda.
