Mozambique: ENI Open Day
Exhibition “Ligados pelo Índico”
The exhibition "Connected by the Indian" is the result of a collaboration and artistic residency taking place from 09 to 17 July 2018 at the CCFM, among the artists Kid Kréol & Boogie (Reunion Island) and Hugo Mendes ( Mozambique).
Jean-Sébastien Clain and Yannis Nanguet met during their studies at the School of Fine Arts in Le Port (Reunion Island) and formed the duo Kid Kréol & Boogie in 2008. Active in the midst of street art, they have worked in many countries such as South Africa, Brazil, Madagascar, Slovakia among others, for festivals as well as for exhibitions and live performances.
The work of Kid Kréol & Boogie consists of the revelation of a Creole imaginary of Reunion Island. It draws mainly on the beliefs and cultures of the Indian Ocean. Influenced directly by rites, tales and legends that can be found in the animist cultures, they try to work ancestral content in a contemporary way, confronting the real and the imaginary.
Hugo Mendes is a visual artist who was born and raised in Maputo.
As Mozambique is a country with a very rich and diverse culture, and with a strong tradition in the woodwork and sculpture, Hugo is inspired by these processes. Through his work, he tries to represent aspects of everyday life, referring to the collective history of Mozambicans, to his dreams, and seeking to explore more intimate elements related to the darker side of his own imagination.
