President Nyusi appoints new Council of State members

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Wednesday called for the new members of the Council of State to leave behind party prejudices for the sake of the country.

The President was speaking at a ceremony in Maputo at which three members of the Council of State were sworn into office.

Isaque Chande joined the Council of State on account of his recent appointment as Ombudsman. He is a lawyer by profession and holds a law degree from Maputo’s Eduardo Mondlane University. Until his election to the post, Chande was the Minister of Justice.

Rahil Khan from the opposition party Renamo was appointed to replace Jeremias Pondeca, who was murdered in Maputo in October 2016.

The other person appointed was Graca Machel, widow of the country’s first president, Samora Machel, and a prominent activist for the rights of children and women.

President Nyusi told the members “in advising the President, do it with serenity and nobility, and leave behind any party prejudices or colours. It is only in this way that that you can inspire us to take the best decisions that reflect and defend the highest expectations of our people”.

The Council of State is an advisory body to the President. It consists of the chairperson of the Mozambican parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, and any former chairperson; former Presidents of the Republic; the Prime Minister; the Chairperson of the Constitutional Council; the ombudsman; the runner-up in the last presidential elections; seven figures elected by the Assembly; along with prominent figures chosen by the President and parliament.

There is a vacancy on the Council of State created with the death of Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama on 3 May, who was the runner-up in the previous presidential elections.
