Mozambique: Multi-storey housing project in Chamanculo "C", Maputo
Polana Caniço A and B neighbourhoods’ cramped houses, narrow streets and poor sanitation form a stark contrast with Costa do Sol’s upmarket Triunfo neighbourhood right next door, but it’s a picture destined for the dustbin of history when the neighbourhoods’ rehabilitation kicks off in May.
Maputo city council has completed feasibility studies on a project which envisages the construction of 30,000 apartments plus schools and other social infrastructure, including the widening of streets.
The project, first announced in by the municipality 2013 but only due for launch in May, is to be executed by a private consortium at an estimated cost of US$3.5 billion.
“The project’s implementation will span 10 years. The process will not be conducted solely by the city council – we have worked out the plans and will coordinate. The investor is from the private sector,” economic activities councilor Joao Munguambe said.
