Mozambique sacks boss of state broadcaster

The Mozambican government has announced the sacking of Armando Inroga as the Chief Executive Officer of state broadcaster. Inroga had been five months into his appointment as head of the Mozambique Television.
“The Council of Ministers approved the resolution that determines the dismissal of Armando Inroga from the position of Chief Executive Officer of TVM for conflict of interest”, Cabinet spokesperson Ana Comoana told a media briefing on Tuesday.
Soon after taking office in February, Inroga’s appointment had been contested by the Southern Africa Media Institute-Mozambique (MISA-Mozambique), which issued a statement calling on the government to revoke the decision.
It contended that the appointment of a politician with no history in the media “was a rude blow to the ambition of the country to move towards a full freedom of the press, independence and impartiality of the public media”.
MISA filed a challenge through the Administrative Court, saying the appointment violated the country’s constitution in addition to raising other concerns as Mozambique heads to its fifth municipal elections in October this year.
