A week after the adjournment of the extraordinary session of parliament, Frelimo is demanding Renamo provides “concrete signs” of disarmament and demilitarization as a condition for the holding of the special session that will approve the revision of electoral legislation for the 10 October municipal elections.
But Eduardo Mulémbwè says that, more than a requirement, it is a commitment made by Renamo itself to go forward to the elections in a free environment with only the “ghost of arms”, although today the party reacts with surprise when faced with the demand for disarmament and demobilization of its guerrilla force.
“It is a commitment that has taken on over time: we will go to the elections to deepen our democratic coexistence, but without fear that at the end of the election, if someone is not satisfied with the results, they will again threaten stability in the country,” he explained.
Member of the Political Commission and head of the central brigade for the province of Maputo, Mulémbwè noted that, for Frelimo, it was essential to signal stability in the country. “I believe we are all aware of this, and that there will be people of good-will, people who think we must walk towards the elections with our hands free of weapons.”
Although there is still no sign of parliament holding the special session, Mulémbwè believes that the holding of the elections is not yet at risk.
“The matter depends on several actors, but I believe that if we can find the solution as soon as possible, we can still hold the elections on 10 October. We all have to make the effort so that as soon as possible this (disarmament) can reassure us that the elections will take place in an atmosphere of peace and that in the end there will be no threats,” he said.
Mulémbwè agreed to answer questions about the dispute between Frelimo and Renamo during a press conference on preparations for elections in Maputo province. “If the calendar does not change, next week we’ll get the heads-of-list candidates’ names out,” he promised.
