Residents of Matlhemele district in Matola municipality say they will not give up the space designed for construction of the landfill without land and money in compensation for building and other infrastructure that will be demolished for construction works to begin.
According to the residents’ committee, the municipality is suggesting the removal of close to 1,000 families occupying the 400 square metres of land required to expand the landfill. Residents say that the authorities have already said that they will not compensate the families, who will only receive new land in the Golhoza neighborhood.
In addition to cash compensation, residents are also demanding that authorities create basic amenities in the areas they will be relocated to.
