An armed group on Friday attacked Maganja, in Cabo Delgado, where it killed five people, torching 120 houses as it looted the village, a source from the authorities has told Lusa.
Maganja is located in the district of Palma, about five kilometres distant from the perimeter attributed to the construction of projects connected with the exploitation of natural gas.
It is suspected that the authors are part of the same movement, composed of different cells, which has attacked residents of vs in the villages in the middle of the bush, without electricity or infrastructure, in the province of Cabo Delgado since October 2017.
The group entered the village of Maganja by 23:00, stole rice, other food products and some animals, such as goats.
The victims were murdered with machete blows and gunshots.
In the latest wave of violence since May 27, at least 29 people, 11 alleged attackers and two members of the security forces have died, according to figures from the authorities and testimonies of the population collected by Lusa.
Prior to Friday night’s raid on Maganja, the previous attack had taken place on Tuesday night in the remote village of Litandacua, administrative post of Chai, Macomia district – more than 100 kilometres distant, in a straight line in a southwest direction, on the same province of Cabo Delgado.
