Mozambique’s Minister of State Administration, Carmelita Namashalua, on Saturday urged state employees to be implacable against corruption and to perform their duties with professionalism, zeal and dedication.
Speaking in Maputo, after laying a wreath at the Monument to the Mozambican Heroes, on the occasion of United Nations Public Service Day, celebrated on 23 June every year, Namashalua urged all public servants to act in accordance with the law, and to support initiatives leading to the restoration of public integrity.
The Maputo celebrations were held under the motto “Fighting against corruption in public institutions, through participation and promotion of ethical leadership to implement the Sustainable Development Goals”.
Namashalua said this motto commits all state employees to fighting against corruption in the public service, bearing in mind the tragic consequences that corruption has in hindering economic and social well-being.
“Corruption neutralizes all the efforts that seek to promote the development, peace and security of citizens”, the Minister said. “Corruption is most worrying when it is caused by public servants, who have the duty to act with professionalism”.
She announced that in 2017 disciplinary proceedings were initiated against 2,255 workers of the public administration. So far, these cases have led to the sacking, or the expulsion from the state apparatus, of 309 people.
Namashalua said the government is concerned at this situation – even though the public servants accused of wrongdoing are only 0.7 per cent of all those employed in the public service.
Namashalua’s words echoed those of President Filipe Nyusi who received a delegation of state employees on Friday, and told them “We cannot tolerate bribery, illicit charges, diversion of funds, falsification of documents, tampering with tenders, theft and favouritism, among other forms of corruption”.
He recalled that the African Union has declared 2018 as “Anti-Corruption Year”, and so government strategies in this area are also harmonised at continental level. “The actions under way seek to strengthen integrity, and the transparency of administrative acts, and to build up capacity and preventive mechanisms”, Nyusi said.
