The Standing Commission of the Mozambican parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, has postponed the extraordinary sitting on changes to decentralisation laws scheduled for today and tomorrow, a parliamentary source has told Lusa.
The new date could be agreed today, Thursday, at a meeting of the Standing Commission, he added.
Specialised commissions have already concluded opinions on the amendments they will propose to the plenary session, aiming at harmonising laws with the constitutional amendment on decentralisation approved in May.
The constitutional changes resulted from consensus reached between President Nyusi and the former leader of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), Afonso Dhlakama, who died on May 3.
The new constitution provides for provincial governors to be elected from 2019, instead of being appointed by the president. The same will apply to district administrators, who are to be elected from 2024.
Municipality mayors will be elected as of this year as heads of list to the municipal assembly.
