Dedicated public transport lanes between Praça dos Combatentes and downtown Maputo between 05:30 a.m. and 08:30 a.m. and 15:30 and 19:00 will come into effect in a couple of days.
The initiative is intended to give public transport greater fluidity and mobility at rush hour.
On Avenida das FPLM, Avenida Acordos de Lusaka and Guerra Popular, the left lane will be reserved exclusively for public transport vehicles.
Councilor for Transport and Traffic at the Municipal Council of Maputo João Matlombe explains that parking along the entire length of the road will be suspended to allow three lanes of traffic to circulate.
“What we intend is to prohibit parking and make room for the circulation of vehicles in the left lane, and mixed vehicles on the other two. Our biggest challenge is to prevent cars from parking on the road,” Matlombe said.
Signage informing the public of the new dispensation is currently being installed and is expected to be completed as soon as possible.
“We expect to be able to start this month, with sufficient traffic agents on duty to enforce circulation and parking discipline,” he said. The introduction of the measure follows on from the acquisition of 270 buses by a partnership between the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the private sector.
