Award ceremony of the 4th edition of the Writing and Handicraft Contest - Cornelder de Moçambique
Tomorrow, Mozambican Women’s Day, coincides with the anniversary of the death of Samora Machel’s second wife, Josina Machel, who joined the struggle for national liberation at a young age. But the public holiday celebrates the achievements of women in many fields.
In the arts we also find heroines, true warriors who struggle daily for their own space, some of whom will take to the stage of the Centro Cultural Franco-Mozambican tonight at 20:30 p.m..
Representing all Mozambican women art-lovers, seven women will share the stage, using music, dance and fashion as their weapons to fight for peace. Yolanda Kakana, Sizaquiel Matlombe, Isabel Novella and Regina dos Santos will represent the country’s singers, dance will be represented by Katya Manjate and Janeth Mulapha and the works of designer Maida Jossefa will manifest the power of fashion.
To further women in decision-making, they were each asked to say something about the political and military tension plaguing the country.
“Silencing the guns will be a major achievement for peace,” said singer Isabel Novella, first pan-African artist to sign with Native Rhythms and Sony Music.
Kakana lead singer Yolanda said: “Nothing justifies war – lay down your weapons!”
Regina dos Santos, lead singer of the band Gran’Mah, said that Mozambicans “are all brothers. War finds no place where there is understanding”.
Sizaquiel, perhaps one of Mozambique’s best vocalists, spoke of the power of peace. “Peace is love, freedom and confidence.”
Choreographer and dancer Janeth Muhlapa said: “Peace is synonymous with a harmonious, cohesive and smiling people,” said choreographer and dancer Janeth Muhlapa, while Katya Manjate offered in turn: “There is no alternative to peace. Peace is the way.”
Finally, designer Maida Jossefa was short and comprehensive: “Peace comes from ourselves,” she said.
