Dom Jaime Pedro Gonçalves, Archbishop emeritus of Beira, Mozambique, died this morning
The Archbishop Emeritus Dom Jaime Pedro Gonçalves, died early this morning in the Avicena Clinic, in Beira city, due to prolonged illness.
According to Radio Mozambique, Don Jaime was admitted to the private practice because of his condition .
A man widely respected and well known beyond religion, due to his vigorous intervention in the political arena, Archbishop Dom Jaime Pedro Gonçalves joined the delegations that negotiated the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 1992 in Rome, which ended 16 years of war in Mozambique.
He was a diocesan bishop since December 3, 1976, elevated to the dignity of archbishop on June 4, 1984, resigned on 14 January 2012.
