Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Wednesday inaugurated the municipal medical stores in Maputo city, a facility which cost the municipality 71 million meticais (about 1.18 million US dollars).
Speaking after the inauguration, Nyusi stressed that the effectiveness of the medical stores is intrinsically linked to distribution.
“Rational distribution should guarantee speed in delivery with the desired quantity and quality”, said the President . “The transport of medicines should also be in accordance with the characteristics of each product”.
Nyusi said he was aware of the constraints in the normal flow of the logistics and management chain, such as the theft of medicines from the national health service and their illegal sale. “These constraints will not be eliminated by building more warehouses”, he said. “We must increase the control over medicines and other medical items of the health service”.
Nyusi called for improvements in the management of stocks and in conserving medicines and medical articles, through greater accountability of those who participate in the supply chain, and greater involvement by the communities.
“Despite the measures that seek to improve the logistics chain, and the fight against the theft of medicines, we can only achieve the desired success, with greater community involvement”, he stressed.
Nyusi said that storage is one of the fundamental and indispensible stages in the chain of medical logistics, forming part of a range of procedures that include receiving the medicines, conserving them, security against damage and theft, stock control and the final delivery to health units or pharmacies.
Nyusi added it is essential that the health sector establish criteria for monitoring this entire chain to ensure that medicines are correctly received, stored, conserved and distributed.
The new Maputo medical stores cover a hectare of land, and construction took 18 months. The facility includes rooms to assess the quality of medicines, security for specific medicines, cold stores for those products which should be conserved at low temperatures, and an area where large volumes of medicines can be stored.
The stores also include a warehouse for the vaccines needed for Mozambique’s expanded vaccination programme, equipped with four cold storage units. The stores also have a borehole for water supply and an autonomous transformer for electricity.
This inauguration was Nyusi’s first stop in a tour of Maputo city.
