The government of Nampula is hoping the Ministry of State Administration and Civil Service will grant permission for four of the province’s administrative posts – Muite, Netia, Iuluti and Corrane – to be elevated to district status.
The issue was revisited last Friday by Nampula governor Victor Borges during a seminar on territorial organization held in the provincial capital. If approved, Nampula will have 27 districts.
The plan to promote these regions was submitted to the central government in 2013, and, according to Nampula governor Victor Borges, the population of the administrative posts insist that they already meet the necessary conditions.
“The objective behind the creation of these new districts is to improve governance arrangements, and answer the challenges posed by population, socio-economic and cultural growth,” said Borges.
The provincial government has also proposed Namicona and Macumano as new village headquarters of the administrative posts of Ribaué and Lunga, in the districts of Ribaué and Mossuril respectively.
When the new administrative division of Nampula province promoting the administrative posts of Larde and Liupo to district status was presented, it created discontent in Corrane, whose residents expected to be among the new districts created in 2013.
The population of Corrane maintain that their vast territory and its rich fauna and forest potential should persuade the government to raise the region to district category. Moreover, the 70 kilometres between Corrane and district headquarters in Meconta hinders regular and effective monitoring of the area by the authorities.
With an estimated population of over five million, Nampula is Mozambique’s most populous province and is so far divided in 23 districts: Angoche, Eráti, Ilha de Moçambique, Lalaua, Larde, Liúpo, Malema, Meconta, Mecubúri, Memba, Mogincual, Mogovolas, Moma, Monapo, Mossuril, Muecate, Murrupula, Nacala-a-Velha, Nacala-Porto, Nacarôa, Nampula, Rapale and Ribáuè. The province has seven municipalities: Angoche (city); Ilha de Moçambique (city); Malema (vilage); Monapo (village); Nacala Porto (city); Nampula (city) and Ribaué (village).
