Tourism: Mozambican prime minister challenges new director-general to give new impetus to INATUR – Watch

Mozambique’s Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosário on Wednesday sworn into office a new director general of the National Tourism Institute (INATUR), noting at the time that, although the tourism sector is one of the government’s priorities, it continues to contribute little to the growth of the national economy.

This scenario led Carlos Agostinho do Rosario to challenge INATUR’s new manager, Romualdo Johnam, to improve the sector and ensure the promotion of tourism.

“Currently, the sector contributes only 2.3 percent to the gross domestic product. This percentage challenges us all, since our country has enormous tourism potential, and tourism is one of the priority areas for government action,” he said.

According to Agostinho do Rosário, the challenge is to make Mozambique a reference tourist destination in the region and the world, while the challenge posed to Johnam extends to jobs creation well beyond the industry’s current 61,000 existing workers.

“We recommend INATUR, in the exercise of its functions of promoting and enhancing our cultural, landscape and faunal wealth, to ensure that every tourism stakeholder, both public and private, continues to contribute to generating more employment and income growth,” he said.

On the other hand, the prime minister called for the resources aimed at the domestic tourism mark to be of the highest quality and value.

Johnam, who was until January of this year an economic adviser on tourism and culture in Brazil, replaces Albino Celestino, who has directed the institute since 2015.
