The National Road Administration (ANE) will shortly announce the dates for the rehabilitation and maintenance of rural roads in the provinces of Nampula and Zambézia, financed by the European Union (EU) at a cost of about EUR 94 million.
Among the routes to be addressed are the 70-km Nampula-Nametil road and the Lioma-Mutuali, Gurué-Nampevo, Coromane-Magige and Gurué-Alto Molócuè axes, all in the province of Zambézia.
The ANE and the EU are currently working on the selection of the entity that will be involved in the feasibility study and the preparation of the detailed engineering project for the works. The company selected will also estimate the costs and prepare the public tender documents.
No start date is set yet, but the parties are aiming to start work as soon as possible, given the importance of the routes to the economy in the regions.
The improvement of rural roads is essentially aimed at facilitating the transport of agricultural surpluses to the markets, increasing the income of producing families.
This is not the first project of its kind. The World Bank recently approved a US$150 million grant that, together with another US$35 million to be allocated by the government, will finance the improvement of rural roads in 10 districts of Zambézia and Nampula between 2018 and 2022.
According to the ANE, the World Bank programme, which is now fully budgeted at US$185 million, includes the rehabilitation and maintenance of rural roads; the rehabilitation of primary network roads; a rural services pilot project; capacity building and project management; and emergencies.
