“The aim is to address issues of energy poverty and lack of access to energy in Africa and elsewhere from the perspective of a low carbon, safe, equitable and democratic development path,” the document details.
“More than 70 percent of the population of Mozambique lives without access to electricity,” the NGO adds, arguing that the expansion of the public network should be discussed alongside with the “climate [justice] of the countries of the North to the countries of the South. We need to talk equity and historical responsibility”.
The annual conferences, bringing together activists, NGO members, academics and government officials and organised by Environmental Justice, have been taking place in Maputo since 2015.
