Mozambique: Government wants to consolidate decentralized governance - Minister
The United States Government congratulates the Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique, members of the parliamentary party caucuses, and the parties themselves, for approving the constitutional amendments on decentralisation.
The unanimous vote in favour of the amendments is a victory for the peace process and for the people of Mozambique. It recognises the courageous efforts of the President of the Republic of Mozambique, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, and of the late leader of Renamo, Afonso Dhlakama, in concluding the decentralisation agreement and submitting it to Parliament for debate and approval.
As dialogue continues, we look forward to further progress on a demilitarisation agreement that will be the final step to achieving a lasting peace for this great nation.
The Assembly’s unifying actions, in reflecting the will of the people, reinforce Mozambique’s democracy and demonstrate clearly that the country’s challenges will be resolved through dialogue rather than conflict.
The United States remains steadfast in its support of these efforts.
