World Bank to carry out business environment study in ten Mozambican cities

The World Bank announced today that it is to carry out a study focusing on the business environment for small and medium enterprises in ten Mozambican cities this year.

The report will look at regulation in terms of business start-up, property registration, international trade and contract execution, the World Bank statement says, and the results will be published in the first quarter of 2019.

The analysis will cover the cities of Beira, Chimoio, Inhambane, Lichinga, Maputo, Nampula, Pemba, Quelimane, Tete, and Xai-Xai.

The ports of Beira, Maputo and Nacala, as well as the land border of Ressano Garcia, will also be analysed as foci of international trade, the World Bank communique relates.

“We hope that this Mozambique ‘Doing Business’ study will encourage and inform” stakeholders in “active dialogue on the importance of the regulatory environment for economic growth”, it continues.

The institution aims to produce “a useful and inspiring instrument for implementing effective reforms in the country” World Bank director for Mozambique Mark Lundell says, and the study represents the World Bank’s commitment to making the private sector more competitive.

“In assessing selected cities in Mozambique, local, provincial and national authorities will have the data and the relevant good practices to replicate successful elements of experience in other contexts,” he adds.
