The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation yesterday asked for a meeting with the Mozambican Ambassador to Spain, José Matsinha, to present a complaint about the deportation of feminist Eva Anadon Moreno.
Moreno was arrested for participating in a March 18 rally in Maputo protesting against the mandatory wearing of long skirts in schools as a way of addressing sexual harassment.
Against diplomatic usage, the Mozambican government did not report Moreno’s arrest to the Spanish embassy, who only learned about it when Moreno personally communicated that she was being taken to immigration services on 29 March.
The Spanish consul came to assist her, but was prevented from doing so. She was , however allowed to accompany her to the airport, where the consul demanded an explanation for Moreno’s expulsion, without success.
The Spanish embassy in Maputo presented its verbal complaint on Wednesday, and the Spanish foreign ministry yesterday summoned the Mozambican ambassador for a meeting to take place today in Madrid.
Moreno’s expulsion order accused her of “participating in an illegal demonstration, leading a group of children in school uniforms displaying banners contrary to common decency” in a “clear and manifest violation of Mozambican law”.
Spanish diplomats have not questioned the reasons for Morenio’s expulsion, but the fact that she has been deprived of Spanish consular assistance.
Moreno had been living in Mozambique legally for more than four years, working for the UN and various NGOs.
