The Mozambique Tax Authority (AT) is to introduce canine units this year to combat the smuggling of goods, money and drugs across the nation’s borders.
According to AT director Miguel Nhane, the measure aims to increase the collection of tax revenues and reduce Mozambique’s dependence on external finance for development projects.
Nhane says that Mozambique’s borders are widely considered conduits for the trafficking of human beings, drugs and currency. The border of Ressano Garcia is considered the most vulnerable and the busiest.
In addition to canine units, Nhate says: “We are pressing for the introduction of seals for alcoholic beverages and tobacco, to help control the movement of these products.”
