The Mozambican Tax Authority (AT) has seized 70 containers (around 175 cubic metres) of mecula wood in the port of Beira and on Sofala roads recently as a result of a surveillance operation set up to combat timber smuggling and maximizing revenue from the export of forestry products.
The seized wood is valued at 15 million meticais (about 269,000 euros), and was allegedly about to be illegally exported to China.
Authority spokesman Antonio Camacho explained that, if successfully exported, the deal would have cost the Mozambican state more than 4 million meticais (EUR71,000) in taxes and other fees.
Camacho also said that the same successful surveillance operation was underway in Tete, Manica and Zambezia. The case has been referred to the customs court
