“We are facing a tragedy. It’s a very sad day for us,” president of the MDM, Daviz Simango, said in reaction to news of the death of a man he considered a national hero: Afonso Dhlakama.
For Simango, a man who fought for a just cause had died, aware that he had to give his life for democracy in Mozambique. In his view, Dhlakama would remain in the memory of Mozambicans and the oppressed everywhere as someone who saw in life the potential for coexistence and tolerance.
“Our hearts cry out. Men like Afonso Dhlakama are not born every day in our country. We have to acknowledge Afonso Dhlakama as a national hero. We have lost a leader who knew how to live with sacrifices, a man who knew how to give up all comforts for a just cause. I had the privilege of working with him and being with him at leisure too. He was a visionary. We owe it to him to make the regime accept coexistence, and that Mozambique is all of us.”
