A Portuguese Centre for African Studies has named after Lourenço Do Rosário during the World Symposium of Studies of the Portuguese Language which took place from 23 to 28 October in Santarém, Portugal.
Some 1,500 delegates from academies around the world attended the symposium.
The management of the Santarém School of Education decided to name its Centre for African Studies after Mozambican academic Lourenço do Rosário because , as a collaborator with the institution from 1988 to 1992, he had “brought African institutions closer and introduced African studies in the educational establishment, particularly in postgraduate courses.”
Lourenço do Rosário is a member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences.
He was named Commander of the Order of the Southern Cross by the Brazilian government in 1999 in recognition of his services in improving academic relations between Mozambique and Portugal and between Mozambique and Brazil.
Lourenço do Rosário was made an officer of the Order of Santiago da Espada by the Portuguese government in 2008. A street in Quelimane, capital of Zambézia province in Mozambique, is also named after him.
