The Mozambican government faces a deficit of more than 818 million meticais (EUR 11.6 million) for reconstruction work following the damage caused by tropical cyclone Dineo in Inhambane province last February.
Costs are estimated at more than 827 million meticais (EUR 11.7 million), of which only nine million meticais (EUR 125 thousand) is so far available, Council of Ministers spokesman Mouzinho Saíde said yesterday.
“This deficit that means the restoration of people’s living standards will be delayed, but it also affects public and private institutions, which cannot work at their maximum capacity,” he said.
Saíde said that the government and international partners were still committed to rebuilding infrastructure destroyed by the cyclone. Fundraising for immediate responses to the emergency had gone better, but 106 million meticais (EUR 1.5 million euros) of the 605 million meticais (EUR 8.6 million) needed were still lacking, he added.
According to the National Emergency Operational Centre of Mozambique (CENOE), immediate response provides basic help to affected populations, including food assistance, drinking water and the installation of provisional health and education infrastructures.
Cyclone Dineo totally or partially destroyed 2,200 classrooms in the south of the country, affecting 160,000 students, some of whom are still studying in the open, according to CENOE.
Mozambique is cyclically affected by natural disasters such as floods, cyclones and droughts. Cyclone Dineo killed seven people and wounded more than 50, leaving 770,000 people vulnerable, as well as destroying 106 classrooms and about 70 health facilities.
