Drought halves Mozambican sugar exports

Mozambique sugar exports from fell by almost half between 2015 and 2016 as a result of the drought limiting production, official figures released today reveal.
“The reduction [in production] recorded last year was mainly due to crop failures resulting from lack of rainfall,” Mozambican daily Notícias reports, citing data from the Agrarian Development Fund.
In 2015, Mozambique exported 241,000 tons of sugar. The figure fell 43 percent to 138,000 last year, according to information from the Distribuidora Nacional de Açúcar (National Sugar Distributor). According to the same figures, the value of exports is the lowest since 2011, and exports peaked in 2014, at 241,000 tons.
The same entity says that the majority of the sugar that leaves Mozambique is destined for the European Union.
The Agrarian Development Fund says it believes that this year, as a result of better irrigation, there may be an increase of as much as 16.4 percent in production.
