The Youth Development Association of Mozambique (AJUDEM) has filed a complaint with the National Elections Commission (CNE) in response to the latter’s rejection of its candidate for the Maputo municipal elections.
The association, which has named Samora Machel Junior as its head-of-list, says it had not been notified about the withdrawal of members from its list, and only learned of their removal through the press. It was notified last Friday by the CNE.
The Association claims that there were irregularities in the process of validation of candidacies.
“AJUDEM did not acknowledge, not having been notified, the withdrawal of any candidate from its list, under the terms of number 2 of article 30 of Law number 7/2018 of August 3; this is imperative for [the withdrawal] to proceed,” its letter reads.
AJUDEM further notes that it learned only that the CNE had notified four of the citizens subscribing to its list on 21 August, without knowing the content of the hearing.
“In addition, the CNE itself mentioned in paragraph 1 of its communiqué of 21 August 2018 that it should notify a certain number of citizens subscribing to the list of AJUDEM to correct certain irregularities regarding the withdrawal requests they had submitted.”
AJUDEM says it is awaiting a response on the part of the National Commission of Elections to its complaint.
